content creator news - october 9th

💍 Instagram awards, Snapchat Storage, and top trends of the week…

Say goodbye to free storage 😫, plus the viral trends of the week. Here’s what’s up:

👋 Weekly Tips & Tricks

💍“Rings” Creator Awards

Instagram announced a new Rings awards program to honor 25 top creators with a physical gold ring and a special profile badge. Judges (including head Adam Mosseri, Spike Lee, Marc Jacobs, and others) will select creators “shifting culture and breaking barriers.” Winners (to be revealed Oct 16) get recognition – but no monetary prize – as Instagram likens this to “the Oscars for content creators”

▶️ YouTube Tweaks for Creators

YouTube introduced a few quality-of-life updates for creators and viewers: For one, a new “Hide” button lets viewers dismiss end-screen panels that show up at the end of videos.

Additionally, YouTube is removing the hover-over Subscribe button that used to appear on video watermarks (internal data showed it drove <0.05% of new subs) – viewers can still subscribe via the standard button below the video.

👻 Snapchat’s Memory Storage Plan

Snapchat announced a change that could affect active creators’ content archive: it’s introducing Memories Storage Plans for those who exceed the free 5 GB of cloud storage for saved snaps.

In other words, if you’ve been saving a ton of snaps to Memories, you may eventually need to pay to keep storing them indefinitely (Snap says this is to ensure heavy users can back up everything long-term).

🔥 Top Social Trends of the Week

⭐️ I forgot something: This trend is a sweet way to show some love to yourself. It’s a transition trend, so on the beat drop, you can show anything you want. We like this one where the user starts out in makeup, then is her natural self!

⭐️ Bird Trend: This is a silly trend where one person stands on the other person’s arm just like a bird would! To do it, grab an oversized T-shirt, pull your arms out of the sleeves, and bring them through the front. Stand near a wall, place your feet against it, and “stand” on your hands using your core. Then, whistle along to the song’s whistling sound — and you’re the bird!

⭐️ Dance Trend: This trend is for our dancing queens! It was Disney week on Dancing With The Stars, so the algorithm is all about the Disney sounds. The original creator of this dance @renell danced to a song from Cinderella in a new modern way, and it took off!
